Sorakaya Pappu | Bottle gourd Dal recipe | Andhra style
Sorakaya Pappu is a south Indian side dish for rice especially made in Andhra region. Bottle gourd is the english name of Sorakaya. Sorakaya pappu is also known as Bottle gourd dal, lauki ki dal, doodhi ki dal, anapakaya pappu etc.
Dal is a very common side dish in most Indian households. Sorakaya dal is one of the common dal recipes made in many andhra households. Sorakaya pappu is a great side dish for Rice, Roti or Chapati. Adding a simple instant mango pickle or tomato chutney just makes the dal and rice combo not only interesting but also super tasty.!
You can make this bottle gourd dal with out garlic to make no onion no garlic version, add asafoetida to increase flavor. If you make this recipe slightly thinner consistency then it can be served as a simple soup that is so satisfying and tasty. Instead of tomatoes in this dal you can add tamarind or lemon juice to make this dal tangy.

Sorakaya Pappu | Bottle gourd Dal recipe | Andhra style
Main ingredients
- 1 cup Toor dal (Yellow split pigeon peas) ((wash it couple of times))
- 2.5 cups Bottle gourd (Sorakaya) (,chopped)
- 6-7 Green chilies (chopped – adjust per taste)
- 1 medium Tomato (chopped )
- 2.5 cups Water (for cooking)
- Red chili powder (to taste )
- Salt ( per taste)
- Cilantro (to garnish)
Tempering (Tadka)
- 2 tbsps Oil
- 5-6 Garlic cloves (crushed)
- 5-6 Red chilies, dried
- 1 sprig Curry leaves
- 1 tsp Mustard seeds
- 1 tsp Cumin seeds
- 1 tbsp Turmeric powder
Cooking in Pressure cooker/Traditional way
Cooking Dal

Now add all the 'Main Ingredients' into a pressure cooker.

Pressure cook for 3 whistles.

Let the pressure release naturally.

Check for consistency, if needed add more water and bring to a boil. Adjust salt per taste.
Adding Tempering to Dal

Now in a small pan/kadai, add oil and let it get hot.

Once oil is hot add all the ingredients listed under 'Tempering(Tadka)' except Cilantro.

Fry till the tempering is aromatic and garlic gets a golden color. Turn off the heat.

Now add this tempering to the cooked dal and mix well.

Garnish with cilantro and serve hot with Rice.!
Cooking in Instant Pot

Put instant pot on saute mode high, add oil.

Once oil is hot add all the tempering ingredients, and fry till garlic is aromatic.

Now add the tomatoes and fry for 2 mins.

Add in all the main ingredients except Cilantro.

Adjust salt/red chili powder to taste.

Close the lid, put vent to sealing position.

Do Manual(Pressure cook mode) high 10 minutes. Release after 5 mins in warm mode.

Adjust the consistency if needed. (By adding water to dilute or put on saute mode to thicken)

Garnish with cilantro and serve hot.!
- Toor dal can be substituted with masoor dal, moong dal etc.
- Tomato can be replaced with tamarind extract.
- Skip garlic and add asafoetida to make no onion no garlic version.
