Curry leaves rice | Karivepaku rice | Karuveppilai sadam

Curry leaves rice is a simple and nutritious meal to make and it can be made under 30 minutes. If you have leftover rice, then this recipe will come in handy for you. You can customize this recipe to your taste by adding onions or any veggies but I like to make it this way as it is simple. 

 

I like to enjoy my curry leaves rice with yogurt and potato fry or potato chips, Best combo I must say.! This rice also makes a great meal for road trips or travel. It is tasty and picky eaters will love it too. This curry leaves rice tastes best when its spicy but feel free to reduce the spiciness if you are giving it to kids.

This curry leaves rice is great for lunchbox or for a busy weekday dinner. If you don’t have curry leaves powder then just take curry leaves fry them on pan till crispy and make powder from it.

Curry leaves rice | Karivepaku rice | Karuveppilai sadam

  • 4 cups Cooked rice
  • 1/3 cup Curry leaves powder ((see notes))
  • 2 tbsps Oil or ghee
  • 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
  • few pinches Hing/Asafoetida
  • 3 crushed Garlic cloves – crushed (optional)
  • 4 tbsp Peanuts or Cashews (optional)
  • 5 -6 Curry leaves
  • 2 Green chili, slit (or to taste)
  • 2 Red chili (or to taste)
  • 1 lime sized tamarind ball ((extract pulp by soaking in hot water))
  • Salt (to taste)
  1. Take a wok or a pan,add oil and let it get hot

  2. Once oil is hot, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds, let them crackle.

  3. After that add green chili, red chili, garlic, Hing, peanuts and curry leaves. Fry till peanuts are roasted well. 

  4. Next add tamarind extract and fry till raw smell of tamarind goes away. 

  5. Now add curry leaves powder and salt, fry for a minute. 

  6. Add the cooked rice, mix everything gently so that all the spices coat the rice very well. 

  7. Serve hot with yogurt and potato chips 

  1. You can use any curry leaves powder for this recipe. I have 3 varieties in my blog plain curry leaves powder, curry leaves peanut powder and spicy curry leaves powder. I used the curry leaves peanut podi here. 
  2. If you don’t have curry leaves powder then just take curry leaves fry them on pan till crispy and make powder from it. 

  3. Adjust the spice levels to your taste
  4. Instead of tamarind extract, you can add lemon/lime juice.
