Instant Pot – Beginner Terminology

Instant Pot – Beginner Terminology

I have been there, where I was wondering , what is QR? or NR? and scratched my head in embarrassment. If you also felt in the same way or feeling the same way, I assure there is NO need to feel that way as everybody has a learning curve. If you don’t know something feel free to ask here or anywhere on your Facebook groups. If anyone judges or mocks then ignore them , they certainly don’t know how to respect others.

Let me start with terminology aka abbreviations everyone uses in Instant Pot community.

  1. IP – Instant Pot
  2. NPR or NR – Natural Pressure Release or Natural Release.
  3. QR – Quick Release
  4. HP – High Pressure
  5. LP – Low Pressure
  6. PIP – Pot in Pot

Now lets see the details what each abbreviation means

NPR or NR – Natural Pressure Release or Natural Release

This means when the Instant Pot done its cooking, we let it sit until the pressure is all released by its own without messing with the pressure valve. NR will always take time and it is used for liquids, large food quantity etc.

QR – Quick Release

This means when the Instant Pot done its cooking, we will immediately turn the pressure valve(that little black knob on the lid) to venting position, so that all the build up pressure in instant pot will come off in the form of steam or hot moist air. This step should be done cautiously and after the pressure is completely released we need to make sure to keep our face away when we open the lid as there might be residual hot steam from the cooked food. This is usually done for solid foods like rice or grains and where we don’t require moisture retained in the food.

HP – High Pressure

This means that the food is being cooked in High pressure ( which means food will cook fast) , usually you can adjust this setting by clicking the pressure button followed by adjust button.

LP – Low Pressure

This means that the food is being cooked in Low pressure ( which means food will cook slowly and gently) , usually you can adjust this setting by clicking the pressure button followed by adjust button.

PIP – Pot in Pot

This means that we use 2 or more small containers stacked inside the Instant Pot to cook multiple things at the same time. This is widely used and saves a lot of time since we are able to cook multiple foods in one go.

If you know more terminology and abbreviations that you use let me know in the comments below, I would love to add more to the post.
