How to store Green chilies for longer time-100 % Works with results

How to store Green chilies for longer time, this is the question we ask ourselves in the times of crisis, especially now  due to Coronavirus lockdown(COVID_19). Well I have the solution for you and it works 100% without fail. In fact I didn’t buy a single green chili from store in the last 2 years.

Yes we have our own vegetable garden here in Houston, Texas. Whenever I have excess green chilies, I store using this method (see below) and I don’t have to buy green chilies in the winter. I am so grateful for my veggie garden and its abundance. I have several varieties of green chilies growing in my garden – Jalapeno, Chili pequin, Serrano, Cayenne, Anaheim, Ghost chili etc. Some of these didn’t survive from last year.

Now, if you are buying green chilies from the store, make sure you wash them thoroughly couple of times to get rid of any unwanted dirt, debris, bacteria etc. You can soak and rinse in vinegar water to make it more effective.

How to store Green chilies for longer time-100 % Works with results

  • Green chilies ((I have also used ripened green chilies i.e.red chilies))

Prepare

  1. Remove the stalks from green chilies

  2. Wash the green chilies thoroughly to remove dirt, debris etc. Couple of times in warm water.

  3. Pat dry with a towel.

Method 1 – FREEZE THE WHOLE CHILIES

  1. Now you can freeze these whole chilies in a ziploc bag(take all the air out) or in a freezer safe box.

  2. Whenever you want to use, just take them out and run under water to quickly thaw. Then use them as you would use fresh green chilies.

Method 2 – FREEZE THE PASTE

  1. Take the washed green chilies and make a paste. Preferably without using water.

  2. Take this paste and put into small ice cube tray. Freeze the tray in the freezer.

  3. Once the tray is frozen, take the cubes out and store in ziploc bags.

  4. Whenever you want to use, take one cube and use it directly in the recipe.

  1. You can use vinegar water to wash the green chilies. 
  2. I have also frozen ripened green chilies i.e. red chilies without any issues.
