Poha | How to make Poha | Indian flattened rice dish

Poha is traditional Maharastrian breakfast dish made of flattened rice and vegetables. This is a wholesome Indian breakfast dish which can be prepared in less than 25 mins. 

 

You can any veggies you like to the dish but usually onions, potatoes, peas, carrots, beans etc are used. There are several variations to this versatile dish, if you make it with onions then it is called onion poha, if you make it with potatoes it is called Kanda poha etc. 

Traditionally peanuts are also used in the dish but if you have peanut allergies you can use cashew nuts. Always choose thick flattened rice while making poha because it wont get soggy and stays separate without getting mushy. 

Poha is very nutritious and wholesome, don’t hesitate to make it for a quick lunch or a snack. This also makes a great food for travel as it is dry and usually doesn’t need any accompaniments.

Poha – Indian flattened rice dish

  • 1-2 tbsps Oil
  • 1 tsp Mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp Cumin seeds
  • few pinches Hing/Asafoetida
  • 1 Sprig Curry leaves
  • 3 pcs Red chili
  • 1 slit Green chili
  • 3 to 4 tbsps Peanuts
  • 1/2 Onion (sliced)
  • 1 Potato (cubed)
  • Salt (to taste)
  • 1 tsp Turmeric powder
  • 2 cups Poha (Thick variety) (aka Indian flattened rice)
  • 1 tbsp Cilantro – garnish
  • 2 tbsps Sev (optional) (thin crispy chickpea flour noodles)
  • 1.5 tbsps Lime juice ((or lemon juice))
  1. First take the flattened rice and immerse them in clean water. Then gently squeeze the water from flattened rice and put in a separate bowl. This step will make the flattened rice soft and moist.

  2. Now take a wide pan and add oil. 

  3. Once oil is hot at mustard seeds, cumin seeds, Hing/Asafoetida,Curry leaves,Red chili, Green chili,Peanuts and Turmeric powder.

  4. Fry till peanuts get golden for about 2 mins.

  5. Now add onions, potatoes and salt, cover with a lid and cook till potatoes are soft but not mushy. Occasionally stir. 

  6. Once potatoes are done add prepared flattened rice and mix well. cover with lid and cook for 2 to 3 mins. 

  7. Add lime juice and mix well. 

  8. Garnish with Cilantro and Sev , serve Hot.! 

  1. Some also like to add red chili powder instead of whole red chilies
  2. Add other veggies like peas, carrots etc if desired.
  3. Serve with mint-cilantro chutney if desired
  4. 160ml cup is used for measurement
