Masala Khichdi Instant Pot | Guest post
This Masala Khichdi in Instant pot recipe is by Carmen Devida, she is a member of Subbucooks Facebook group and a while ago I was supposed to post her recipe but was unable to post sooner.
Finally I am posting this recipe, I tried the recipe and it is really good. A must try if you like Khichdi, also I didn’t alter the recipe in anyway as I feel that it is not fair.
For those who don’t know what Masala Khichdi is, it is a rice dish made from lentils,rice and vegetables. Perfect meal as itself or with spicy pickle.
Khichdi is a Indian comfort meal and all time favorite in any Indian household. It is best served Hot and works wonders on a really bad day, lifts up the mood and the spirits.

Masala Khichdi Instant Pot | Guest post
Ingredients for Instant Pot
- 1/2 cup split moong dal (washed till water runs clear)
- 1/2 cup Rice (washed)
- 1/2 cup vegetable of your choice (carrots,green beans etc )
- tsp Salt (or to taste)
- 1/4 tsp Turmeric powder
- 1 tbsp Ghee
- 3 cups Water
Spice Mix Ingredients
- 2 tbsps Ghee
- 1/2 tsp Cumin seeds
- 1/2 tsp Mustard seeds
- 1/8 tsp Hing or Asafoetida
- 1.5 cups Tomato (finely chopped)
- 1 Green chili (finely chopped)
- 2 tsps Ginger (shredded)
- 2 tbsps Cilantro (chopped)
- 1/4 tsp Garam Masala
Instant pot instructions.

Place all the above mentioned “ingredients for Instant Pot” in Instant Pot, pressure cook for 4 minutes, natural release or release after 10 minutes.
Cooking spice mix

While moong dal & rice are cooking, prepare Spice Mix

Melt ghee in pan, medium heat. Add cumin seeds & mustard seeds when oil is hot enough for seeds to sizzle, and asafetida, brown for 30 seconds.

Add tomatoes, green chili, chili powder, salt and ginger.
Cook on medium or medium low until tomatoes are soft and mushy. (about 5 minutes)

Add garam masala and chopped cilantro.
Assembling the Kitchdi

Combine Spice Mix with cooked moong dal & rice.

Garnish with more cilantro if you wish
I used frozen Lima beans and corn for Veggies.
